Just in Time or a short History of Production

A book printed through a printing chain made of four desktop printers using four different colors and technologies dated from 1880 to 1976. A production process that brings together small scale and large scale production, two sides of the same history.

Young I Kim.

Young I Kim hat ihren kugelförmigen Kupferschalen die eigentliche Funktion genommen und sie, „mit Poesie gefüllt“, zu Kunstobjekten gemacht. Ihre von Hand aufgezogenen „Charakterisierten Gefäße“ interpretieren menschliche Eigenschaften, die Young I Kim bei ihren Freunden studiert hat. Intensive, monochrome Farben unterstützen die individuelle, unregelmäßige Form. Die Emaille wird vier- bis sechsfach aufgetragen, gebrannt, aufwändig poliert und am Schluss mit Wachs geschützt. Der leicht gezackte Rand bildet einen spannenden Kontrast zur runden Form und soll den “Einblick in die Seele” vermitteln.

"In this work I begin with an existing book and seal its edges, creating an enclosed vessel full of unearthed potential. I cut into the surface of the book and dissect through it from the front. I work with knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time, exposing each layer while cutting around ideas and images of interest. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception."
